Old games from Guy

Apogee.  As you probably will know, Apogee isn't a game. It is a firm who has made in the past some magnificent games and I would like to tell something about their games. There were good and there were bad games, but ya, that's normal. I will only tell about the good ones. First of all, there are Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone, two games I discuss separately, but there are others too (Raptor, Stargunner, Crystal Caves, Cosmo's Comic Adventures, Hocus Pocus, Monster Bash).  Because I like to edit games, I'm thinking of creating editors for all of these apogee games. I'm aware of the existence of an editor for Cosmo's Comic Adventures, so hopefully I can do the same for all other games. If you know more about editors for these games, please feel free to contact me.

Wolfenstein, Guystein I (828 kB), Guystein II (155 kB).  Wolfenstein is great, even if it is about war, and war is never great. You need to battle against Adolf Hitler and many of his friends. You do this by shooting them with four different weapons (a knife, a little revolver, a bigger gun and a great mega gun). Obviously, the bigger gun shoots better, but also costs more ammo. Each level (a level consists of 10 floors) ends with the fight against a so called Super Boss. Personally, I'm not a big fan of them. I find it a little bit boring, shooting them. So, you will never find any of them in my self-made (new) levels. Furthermore, the graphics are simple, but nice and clear. You just walk, or run, through three-dimensional corridors. So don't expect graphics as the one from Quake or Tomb Raider or from other modern games. In fact, this game is so well-known, I guess, no further explanations are necessary. Every real gamer knows this piece of art and I believe everyone likes it. Maybe it is too old for some people. I need to admit this, but why search better if you have the best. There were only two versions of this game in the past. We have the Wolfenstein 3D (The Original). This is the one we mean if we talk about Wolfenstein. The second version is called Spear of destiny. There were some changes compared with the original game. I have to admit I do not own this game, but I believe the most important changes are the possibility to grab 25 bullets in a time and the fact that there were also less floors. Beside all this, you have the possibility to play (even if you only have the unregistered version) so-called add-ons.  Please try my self-made add-ons, called Guystein I and Guystein II. In every set, there are 30 playable and 30 unplayable floors. You can make them also playable by using the password. You can easily get this password by sending me an e-mail and ask it friendly. This concept is called (by myself, I really don't know it exists) mailware. What can you expect from the new levels?

  • Many guards, on every floor 149 guards in Guystein I and 144 in Guystein II (with some exceptions like maximum 148 in the last floor of each level, or the final floor of Guystein I with the Ghost Hitlers).
  • Much shooting from behind barrels or pillars (this is something I really like).
  • Secret rooms are easy to find.
  • Sometimes too much ammo and food (I must admit this, but ya, you will never starve).
  • No Super Bosses.
  • And lots of fun, crazy traps and dangerous rooms.

Blake Stone, Guystone (129 kB), Planet Strike, Guystrike (49 kB).  Another shooting game, but now in future. There is no Hitler anymore, but a greater enemy appears, Mr. Goldfinger. He created many so-called mutants (in fact animals, but with certain human capabilities). These mutants really are bad. Even some of them are able to transform themselves. So there is a huge mushroom that grows and a new pod mutant is born. Or the crazy ghost mutant, lying under the sheets of a bed, looking like a dead body, but it watches carefully to attack. And of course there are also some Super Guards, but people who know me will not be surprised I don't like them very much. Another fine enemie is the turret. A turret is an automatic shooting mechanism, hanging on the ceiling, maybe rotating, but first of all heavily shooting whenever it sees you. Some people call blake stone the sequal of wolfenstein 3D and maybe they are right. Indeed, there are many equalities. You still walk or run through three-dimensional corridors, you still need to shoot enemies before they shoot you and there are also enough goodies to take with you. Only the graphics are a little bit more futuristic with regard to Wolfenstein, too flashy maybe, but that isn't the soul of the game. So the final conclusion is simple. When Wolfenstein was the best, Blake Stone is better than the best. There are two versions of this game. First of all we have Blake Stone (Aliens of Gold). About this game we are talking all the time. But there is also a version called Blake Stone (Planetstrike). Here are many more capabilities, compared with the original game. Personally, I find it the best of the best of the best. So many tricks, traps, enemies and so many capabilities makes it really good. It's only a pitty the graphics aren't nice. Why not programming all this possibilities into wolfenstein. That would be a great game, but ya, I'm not a great visual programmer. If someone wants to do it, please do it. Beside all of this, you could search for add-ons on the net. But I'm afraid you wouldn't find many. I've searched too and I only found some single levels. For that reason I put myself into work and created a full set of my own. Because, I made it myself, I can only admit that this is good. People who has played my add-ons of Wolfenstein know that I do not like Super Bosses, and so there aren't in Guystone. There is much shooting from behind pillars, secret doors are easy to find and there are many bullets and food machines (sometimes you even do not have food tokens any more). The enemies I like most are the ions (the blue, crazy balls, flying up and down or diagonally), the water ghosts and the pods (the living mushrooms). So you can shoot them and you will have to shoot them, otherwise you will be shooted (that's really very logic). Nowadays you can download the full set of 66 levels. There is also a full set for Blake Stone (Planetstrike), named Guystrik. You can also download it.

Paranoid, Guynoid (11 kB).  Paranoid is a great ball-bouncing game. It is a kind of arkanoid game. So you need to destroy every brick on the screen with a little ping-pong ball. The ball falls downward all the time, but you can catch it with your stick, the ball will bounce on it and go back in the air. After some time, there will be less bricks on the screen and logically it will be more difficult to destroy these as when there are many bricks. After some time, the ball will also speed up. This makes it a little bit harder. But there exists some tools to slow down the ball or to make your life easier. These tools appear when you destroy the blocks where they are hided. Some examples of tools are an extra ball, a splitting tool (this splits up the ball in three balls), a slow down tool, a destruction tool (the ball destroys everything without bouncing back on a block), a level tool (you end the level and go to the next) and many more. As you see I'm very pleased with this game. It is great, thrilling and very nice. Yes, there is a possibility to edit the 30 levels. But I'm afraid I can't give it here for download. If you really want to have it, you need to register. How to register is included in the shareware version of the game. Here you can download my own set of levels for paranoid, called Guynoid. It is just another set of levels, sometimes a little bit difficult, but also very nice. You can play this without registering the game, but I really recommend you to register the game. The address where you should send the registration fee, is okay. I have registered myself in the year 2000 and it still worked (I had first contacted the authors of the game to make it sure). If you register you get also a set of 30 new levels, a level editor, cheat codes (included a save game cheat) and the possibility to change the play-keys (shift-keys).

Sensible World of Soccer. This is also an old game, of which you find worldwide many sites on the internet to get the whole game and to update teams and so on. A very nice soccer game. It is really crazy how many things you can do with this incredible game. You can play the world cup, continental cups, leagues from almost everywhere (from South Africa to El Salvador) or just some friendlies. You can create your own leagues, tournaments or cups. It is even possible to become a manager of a club team (restricted till 20 years of management). If you do well, it is possible you promote and maybe you will be promoted to manager of the national team. Oh ya, there is also a possibility to create your own teams, but I must admit I never did this. After a while, you will be experienced with the techniques of the game, so it will play a little bit easier and maybe it's getting bored after some time. Only the world cup is hard to win. Nowadays, the game looks primitive, but it still has a lot to offer.

Lemmings.  Do you know them, or not? In both cases I will tell you something about them. Lemmings are, also seen in real nature, small animals. They look like hamsters and they probably belong to the same family. But I'm afraid they do not live in my neighbourhood, so I can't see them every day. Therefore I'm very glad some person made the concept of lemmings into the computer. By doing this, he (or she) invented a great game that will survive many generations. The concept of the game is easy. You just have to try to save lemmings as much as possible. Doing this is often not that easy. Lemmings do have a little bad attitude. They always walk and walk and walk. If nobody helps them to change directions from time to time, they are condemned to death. So it is our task to help them. You can make them building bridges, digging tunnels, standing still for a while, shooting arrows, flying under an umbrella or just exploding to make some room. All these operations finally must lead to victory. This is a very nice game, although nowadays I'm not playing it any more. In history, there were many versions of lemmings. I will give a small description of some versions.  I'm aware of the fact this Lemmings section is not complete, and therefore I advise you to take a look at the given link.

  • The first time I was bitten by the lemmings virus was with this game, called The Lemmings Cronicles There are now three tribes: the classic one, the egyptian one and the shadow one. Each tribe has 30 levels to complete from which the final ones aren't that easy. Something new, compared with previous games, were the enemies. These enemies made it a little bit harder to complete a level. There is a potato beast (eats lemmings), a psycho buzzard (catches lemmings and make them bleed to death), a lemme fatale (a female lemming who attracks the other male lemmings, they become crazy about her and, because they can't get her, kill themselves) and finally a mole (a friendly beast who makes tunnels for the lemmings). I have played this game all to the end and it is the best lemmings game ever made. If someone knows how to edit this game, please contact me.
  • Another version is called Lemmings 3D. For the first time in history lemmings were 3D creatures with more capabilities and more space to walk in. It's a little bit a pitty, but the graphics aren't that great. I haven't completed this game yet, but sometimes I put myself on the computer and play the next level. There are 100 levels (I guess).
  • The other lemmings games are Lemmings (The Original), Lemmings, the tribes, Lemmings Paintball, Lemmings Revolution.
  • Add-ons are called Christmas Lemmings, Lemmings, Oh No More Lemmings and Holiday Lemmings.

Teddy Boy, Editted (801 kB).  This game is great. It looks very stupid, your kids love it, adults may be become addicted to it. In my case, I'm not really addicted, but I like to play the game, and because I made an editor of it, I really need to mention the game. The game itself originally was played on a SEGA 8-bit console. Some more advanced Teddy Boy versions also exist, but the first one was never really improved. Due to the increasing power of emulators, we are able to play the game on a personal computer. But how the game looks like? You are moving through a two-dimensional space, which shows clearly the concept of the torus, meaning that when going down, you will arrive in the upper part and when moving right, you will arrive in the left part. But beside walking and jumping, you also need to shoot enemies, otherwise there is no fun. Teddy owns a very small gun, but with unlimited ammo, so you don't need to worry about getting bullets. The thing you need to take into account is time, because after shooting an enemy, there will rest some harmless piece of the enemy, somewhere in the world. Take this before it becomes a white fly which eats up time. So, there are two possibilities to die. On one hand you may touch the enemy, on the other hand your time may be gone. Playing all the 50 levels in one time is quite hard to do, but it is possible. And when this isn't enough, the game starts over and over again, until all of your lifes disappeared. I created an editor for this great game. I firstly made it in Matlab (which is a Math program), but after compilation it worked through Visual C++. The problem with this procedure is that it is very slow and the download file became very big. Therefore I contacted a programmer who translated the program into Delphi. Now it works very fast and the file is tiny. Another file, a library, is included and contains the original 50 levels, combined with 50 levels made by myself. Of course, comments, suggestions, questions and tips are very welcome.

Tomb Raider.  No, no. I'm not that kind of person who likes to play with Lara to get her in bed. Neither do I want to get her nude. And ya, I know people have tried it in the past and maybe they succeeded too, but that doesn't interest me. The reason why I like tomb raider is easy. I like to be a detective, searching for hidden walls or objects, finding keys, solving puzzles and, when needed, killing some guards. And yes, maybe the game wasn't that interesting if Lara was a sexy man in tarzan outfit. It makes the game a little bit nicer, you know, playing with a woman. This game is the only game I play nowadays. There are many releases of the game. I have finished the first five versions in a whole (including some commercial add-ons), and currently I'm doing the sixth version, Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness.
